This fish is known locally as a Jacky Conner. (Or possibly Jackie Conner?)
It's real name is Tautogolabrus Adspersus, also known as cunner, bergall, blue perch, conner, perch, or sea perch. Just like my printing plate, the conner can change colour to camoflage themselves!
But where did the name 'Jacky Conner' come from? I've been fishing (HW?) for clues, but haven't discovered the answer yet. Do you know? I'd love to hear your guesses!
Thanks Duke,
You might be on to something- there is also a ‘jack mackerel’, and a male donkey is a ‘jackass’. I don’t know if my cunner drawing model was male or female, so it’s possible that what I have really created is a ‘Janey Conner’.
Any other suggestions out there?
I grew up (up for debate) calling them Jacky, or Jackie conner. No clue where that came from but I can only assume it predated me as it was probably learned from an older someone around me. It might in fact be in the same vein as a jack salmon? Or maybe as with the many other fish where the name has been applied. Maybe it’s a family thing and ask around my contemporaries. Given my brother applied the name Jack to our cousin and neighbour for no reason it is fifty fifty at best that it involves any good sense.
