Throw Back Thursday Ramblings
Janet DavisWe're throwing back to an unknown date- perhaps someone who owns one of these pieces might let me know what year I made it? I don't remember when exactly, but I guess it's somewhere around 2007? The edition sold out fairly quickly, compared to other images, and I went on to create a humpback mother & calf image in the same format, and a fin whale, too, I think. It's hard to remember all the images made here over so many years!
The Common Minke (pronounced Min-kee) whale is indeed quite common in the waters around where I live here in Bonavista Bay. We spot them almost every time we go sailing. I've never seen them put on a show like the humpbacks do sometimes, but it's still wonderful to see them!
There is one particular place, along the clifts near Greenspond, that we saw a pair of them for many years in a row. We have lots of shallow water nearby, but this one spot has lots of deep water, and the minkes really seem to prefer it. I have often wondered if it's the same pair that we keep seeing, returning to the same spot each year.
I made an edition of these minke whale prints using watercolour around the border, and ink on the whale bodies. The two whales in the image face each other, as if about to kiss- appropriate for the upcoming Valentine's day! ♥
