Western Brook Pond

BBARS Art & Science Residency

Janet Davis

Western Brook Pond has been a place that we've wanted to see for a very long time.  Today, we finally did it!  We parked the car, and walked the 3km trail in to the UNESCO World Heritage Site.  We were early, so we had a snack at the dockside cafe, and then spent some time outside reading the interpretive panels.

The scenery on the 2 hour boat tour was nothing short of spectacular.

Western Brook Pond is a land locked, glacier-carved freshwater fjord in Gros Morne National Park.  Some interesting facts: Western Brook Pond has loads of waterfalls, a cyborg 'carved' in the rock, and the water is so pure, it doesn't conduct electricity.  The boat tour operators did an excellent job, explaining what we were seeing as well as making sure that everyone was safe and happy.  We even saw a bull moose, dwarfed by his 2000 feet tall surroundings, on the bank of the pond.
