Female Caplin Series c.2007

Posted by Janet Davis on

This series of linocut intaglio prints with hand embroidery were shown at my 2007 FISH exhibit at the Craft Council Gallery in St. John's.
Each of the 105 female capelin was named (instead of numbered) for the women in my family tree, mostly from Pinchard's Island.
The installation piece was inspired by our female ancestors who don't usually get much mention in our history books.  When I sorted capelin for a brief period many moons ago at Beothic Fish Processors, I learned that the female capelin were kept while the males were tossed.  It seemed like a good fit for this project.
